Miksi keliaakikon on noudatettava gluteenitonta ruokavaliota?

Keliakia on elinikäinen sairaus, jossa vehnän, rukiin ja ohran gluteeni vaurioittaa ohutsuolen limakalvoa. Suolinukan vaurioitumisen vuoksi ravintoaineiden imeytyminen häiriytyy. Keliakian tyypillisiä oireita ovat erilaiset vatsavaivat, väsymys ja anemia. Osa potilaista saattaa olla myös täysin oireettomia.

Keliakian ainoa hoito on elinikäinen ja tarkka gluteeniton ruokavalio. Keliakiaa sairastava ei voi siis käyttää lainkaan vehnää, ruista tai ohraa sisältäviä elintarvikkeita ja ruokia. Kun gluteeni jätetään pois ruokavaliosta, keliakian oireet poistuvat ja suolen limakalvo parantuu vähitellen. Ruokavaliota on kuitenkin noudatettava läpi koko elämän, sillä suolen limakalvo vaurioituu uudelleen pienestäkin gluteenimäärästä.
